The play was an adaptation, made by Roberto Matteo Giordano, of the original musical Mamma mia! written by the English playwright Catherine Johnson. The initial plot focuses on Sophia’s attempt to finally discover her father’s identity after 21 years from her birth; therefore, the girl invites to her wedding the three men her mother had dated before she was born, thus creating an hilarious comedy based on misunderstanding, friendship and love. However, the students were offered a new, different and unique version of the story, in fact the author chose to focus on the relationship between the women in Sophia’s family, introducing the new bubbly character of Stella, the girl’s grandmother.
In the adaptation, the students followed Sophia’s attempt to know who her father is. The research is interrupted by the arrival of a new guest to the wedding, the grandmother Stella, who wasn’t part of the main character’s life because of an argument with Sophia’s mother, Lorraine: in fact, the woman had chosen not to let her daughter meet her father and had forced her to go away from Sophia’s father, too. So, during the course of the play, the original main plot becomes a secondary story compared to the evolution of the women’s relationship.
Even though the original plot has been modified, the structure of the musical remained the same: the students, over the course of the play, had the occasion to enjoy the ABBA’s songs on which Mamma mia! is based. The “Teatro Augusteo”, during the dancing and singing performances of the actors, has been filled with the voices of the students who sang along to the famous songs.
The show left the students very content as it represented an opportunity to learn English in an alternative, funny and interactive way, with the actors engaging the audience multiple times during the musical and answering all the questions the students raised at the end of the show.
